HISTORY

Some of Macedonia Baptist Church of Millican’s earliest historical records and ledgers were, unfortunately, lost/destroyed from being stored in an old corn crib.  However, Macedonia is mentioned on a wedding certificate of Miles Freeman to Malinda Davis on December 27, 1873, recorded in Brazos County Marriage Records.  Elder Porter Scott performed the service, so, by dejection we can calculate the Church’s inception probably predates 1873 – making her at least 153+ years old.

A deed dated October 25, 1875, shows Wm Dunlap and his wife Lucinda J. Dunlap (a white man and woman) sold Porter Scott, Stephen Trepier, and Luke Brown (trustees) four acres for $40 out of land Lucinda received from the estate of Jasper N. Millican, deceased part of the E.M. Millican league, as recorded in Brazos County Deed Records, Book Q.  Macedonia sits on this land.

During the Civil War between the North and South a Confederate training camp, one of two designated by the signature of the Governor of Texas.  The Millican training camp had as many as 5,000 soldiers.  Macedonia sits on part of that training camp.  There is an existing dug well on the edge of the property today that was used as a water source for the Confederate soldiers.

The original church building sat near this well.  The building was high off the ground, had double entrances, and its foyer hung a picture of Doris “Dorie” Miller a Black U.S. Navy sailor who behaved very heroically during the attack on Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii.  The Navy is reportedly considering renaming the USS Doris Miller (new aircraft carrier).  Winnie Ross-Allen shared the information about Dorie Miller’s picture being in the old church building.
